[englisch/amerikanisch, nəʊ weɪv], 1) Bezeichnung einer Ende der Siebzigerjahre in der New Yorker Avantgarde-Szene aufgekommenen Bewegung, die mit diesem Slogan auf die kommerzielle Institutionalisierung des Punkrock als New Wave reagierte. Dahinter stand der Versuch, aus dem Punkrock und seiner Verbindung mit Free-Jazz-Elementen (Free Jazz) sowie Geräuschcollagen ein neues Kunstkonzept, eine Art Avantgarde-Punk zu entwickeln. Ausgegangen ist das von der 1977 gegründeten New Yorker Gruppe DNA. Daneben waren es vor allem Teenage Jesus und Jerks, die zu den wichtigsten erklärten No-Wave-Bands gehörten. Aus dem Begriff wurde dann allerdings schnell ein Werbegag, der als Aufdruck auf den Plattencovers anzeigen sollte, dass es sich bei den entsprechenden Platten um etwas Besonderes handele.
